Heat Pumps Installed in Biloxi

Heat pumps are installed in residential and commercial buildings to both heat and cool, each sized to the building's load.

A heat pump is central air that runs in reverse when you ask it for heat. Inside, the "air handler" holds the coil and the blower, and a copper "line set" joins it to the outdoor unit. Many homeowners like it for that reason alone: a single system to look after instead of an air conditioner plus a furnace.

  • Summer It pulls heat and moisture out of the rooms and sheds them outdoors.
  • Cold mornings The refrigerant loop flips direction and carries warmth indoors from the outside air.

The right size comes from the house itself, its walls, windows, attic and ducts, never from the label on the unit coming out.

Heat Pumps for a Mild Winter

A modern heat pump keeps full capacity down to about 25°F and keeps running below that with "auxiliary heat".

Winter on the coast comes in short cold snaps rather than long freezes, which plays to a heat pump's strength.

The backup, which the thermostat may call emergency heat, is usually a bank of electric heat strips in the air handler that tops up the output on the coldest mornings. If it comes on often, the cause should be diagnosed rather than lived with.

How a Heat Pump Is Installed

A heat pump install runs from a load calculation through removing the old equipment, setting the new unit and testing both modes, and it can often be done in a day.

  1. Size the house

The size comes from a "Manual J" calculation, the method set out in ACCA Manual J. The duct design that goes with it sets the airflow, trunk sizes, diffuser locations and returns.

  2. Clear the old system

The worn outdoor unit and the indoor coil or air handler are disconnected and hauled off, along with any lines that will not be reused.

  3. Set and connect

The outdoor unit goes level on its pad or stand, the air handler goes in, and the line set, wiring and drain are joined and sealed.

  4. Run it both ways

We run it on cooling, switch it over to heating, check the thermostat changes modes cleanly, and clean up when the work is done.

What a New Heat Pump Costs

A new heat pump installation is priced by its size and its efficiency, and it lands within the range published for the area.

Your own figure comes from the walk-through, written down in full before anything begins. What moves it:

  • The size the load calculation lands on
  • The "SEER rating", the efficiency rating you pick
  • Ductwork changes: run distance and attic access
  • Electrical work the new unit needs

Warranty on a New Heat Pump

A new system install usually carries a 10-year manufacturer parts warranty plus one year of labor, which is how the trade generally does it.

10-year
Parts, backed by the maker of the equipment
One year
Labor on the installation itself

Ask to see both terms written into the quote, so you know who stands behind what and for how long before the old unit comes out.

One system for July and January.
