Furnace Replacement in Biloxi

Furnace replacement on residential and commercial buildings takes out the old furnace and installs a new furnace sized to the building it heats.

On the coast a furnace sits idle through the long cooling season and is asked to work hard on the cold nights. When it reaches the point where another repair no longer makes sense, the new furnace usually goes in where the old unit stood, in the same closet, attic or crawlspace, matched to the ductwork that is already there.

The size comes from a load calculation on the house as it is today, not from the label on the furnace coming out. A "builder-grade" unit put in with the house is often the wrong size for a home that has since gained insulation, new windows or a room.

When a Furnace Is Due for Replacement

Age, repeated repairs and a cracked heat exchanger are the usual reasons to replace a furnace.

Here is how each shows up, along with the gas bill, and any of them is worth a call before the next cold snap.

At the free estimate we look the old furnace over and tell you plainly whether a repair still pays.

  • Past its working life

An aging furnace wears out its igniter, blower and controls together, so the part fixed this winter tends to be followed by another part the next.

  • Money into a tired unit

When repeated repairs on the same furnace start adding up toward the price of a new furnace, that money does more going into the replacement.

  • Firebox failure

A cracked heat exchanger can let combustion gases into the air the blower sends through the house, carbon monoxide among them. Keep alarms on every level of the home; the U.S. CPSC Carbon Monoxide Information Center lists the symptoms and says to get everyone to fresh air before anything else.

  • Bills that keep climbing

Rising gas bills with no change in how the house is used point to a furnace burning more gas for the same warmth.

From sizing to a warm house

Sizing and Installing the New Furnace

A load calculation sets the size of the new furnace, then the old furnace is removed and the new furnace is connected, vented and tested.

The trade's standard for that calculation is ACCA Manual J, called "Manual J" on the job, and the same duct design work sets the airflow, trunk sizes, diffuser locations and returns.

  1. Measure the house

Rooms, windows, insulation and the duct runs are measured and written down before any equipment is picked.

  2. Disconnect the old unit

Gas and power are shut off, and the old furnace comes loose from the ducts, the flue and the gas line.

  3. Set the new furnace

The new cabinet goes in place, with sheet metal fitted wherever its openings no longer line up with the ductwork.

  4. Gas and venting

The gas line is connected and checked for leaks, and the vent pipe is run to carry combustion gases outdoors.

  5. Fire it and test

The furnace runs through a full heating cycle while the flame and the airflow pressure, the "static pressure", are checked.

What Furnace Replacement Costs

Furnace replacement is priced by the furnace's size, its efficiency and the venting it needs, inside the typical range for the area shown here, and estimates are commonly free.

Size comes from the load calculation, efficiency from the furnace you pick, and venting from what the closet or attic already has against what the new furnace needs. We look at all of it at the free estimate and quote the whole job before we start, with no surprise charges after.

Weigh it before you buy

Furnace or Heat Pump

A heat pump both heats and cools and keeps full capacity down to about 25°F, so it is an option to weigh at furnace replacement time.

A new gas furnace

Season
Heat only; the air conditioner stays its own system.
Runs on
Natural gas burned inside the cabinet, vented outdoors.
Cold snaps
Full heat output however cold the night gets.
Fits when
The gas line and flue are in good order and the A/C still has years left.

A heat pump

Season
Summer and winter from the same outdoor unit and indoor "air handler".
Runs on
Electricity, with no gas burned in the house.
Cold snaps
On the coldest nights "auxiliary heat", the backup heat, carries the load.
Fits when
The air conditioner is also near the end of its life, so both jobs are done together.
